Italian VAT calculator

Extract the net amount and VAT from a VAT-inclusive price, or start from the net and add VAT. Works with the Italian rates of 22%, 10%, 5% and 4%.

-VAT
-invoice total

How to extract VAT

To remove VAT from a price that includes it, divide by 1 plus the rate: at 22%, net = amount ÷ 1.22. VAT is the difference. Example: €1,220 including VAT is €1,000 net and €220 VAT.

The most common mistake is taking 22% off the gross amount: 1,220 − 22% is €951.60, not €1,000.

For the rate that applies to a specific case, always check with an accountant.

VAT and cash

VAT collected from clients is not all yours: part of it is paid to the State in periodic settlements. Including it in your cash-flow forecast avoids surprises on due dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract 22% VAT?

Divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.22. The result is the net amount; VAT is the difference.

How do I extract 10% VAT?

Divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.10.

Why not just subtract 22%?

Because 22% is calculated on the net amount, not the total. Subtracting it from the total gives a net amount that is too low.

Is the data I enter sent anywhere?
